Rooted in Wonder
Growing up on a lake just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, Griffin Overbye developed a deep connection to the landscapes that continue to inspire his work today. Summers were spent exploring wooded shorelines, watching light dance across the water, and studying the lily pads that grew on the lake of his childhood home.
His dad often photographed those lily pads, capturing them in bright, vivid color. Years later, Griffin found himself returning to the same subject through painting - not as a document of the landscape, but as a memory of it.
Now a recurring motif throughout his work, lily pads serve as a vehicle for exploring stillness, peace, beauty, and the passage of time. His paintings take a soft, muted approach, reflecting both the tranquility of these landscapes and the gentle haze through which memories are often recalled.
Inspired by the lakes and wetlands of Minnesota, Griffin's work seeks to preserve a feeling rather than a place—a quiet moment, a shifting reflection, a sense of peace.
